Rules Questions

I love the rules of Keyforge. They are simple at their core, with a systemic theme of card interaction driven by the decisions of the active player. It is a testament to the robust attention to playtesting and editing that there is (currently) only one card errata out of the first set of over 350 cards.
Nonetheless, the intricacies of the wording of the rules means that players have to exercise great care in how effects are implemented in order. (Yeah, Library Access and Wild Wormhole, I'm looking at the two of you troublemakers.)
So I'm creating a running list of questions I have raised about certain cards. I'll answer those issues as best as I can, citing the rules, glossary and FAQ directly. This will give me practice in learning the rules and more importantly help train my mind to implement the rules correctly
Also, I'll add to the list as new incidents arise that I want to dissect. But here's what I've run across so far:

Q1: Is a creature friendly to itself? In other words, does Halacor grant skirmish to itself? Does the Grey Monk grant himself one armor?
A1: According to the definition of Friendly in the Glossary:
If a card ability refers to a “friendly” game element, it refers to an element currently under the control of the same player.
So if you play the creatures mentioned, they are under your control and are all considered "friendly" under the blanket definition provided. To put it succinctly, a creature is friendly to itself.

Q2: If I use an opponent's card (usually an artifact) on my turn, does it tap?
A1: This question came up in a game where I played against a Dis deck. I was able to "use" my opponent's Lash of Broken Dreams two turns in a row. We played it where not only did it prevent him from forging a key for two turns in succession, but it left the card tapped. So when he chose Dis as his Active House, my opponent was unable to use the Lash since I had already exhausted the card.
Turning to "Using Cards" on page 6 of the rules, the first bullet point under "Using Artifacts" states:

  • When a player uses an artifact, they exhaust the card and then resolve its abilities.

So it clearly sounds like if I can use an opponent's artifact, then that artifact is still exhausted on my opponent's turn until Phase 4: Ready Cards.

Q3: Does Hebe the Huge hit himself if there are no other targets?
A3: I'm including this question because I jotted it down during a game after applying two damage to Hebe. My opponent didn't object, but he didn't read the card closely. Turns out, neither did I.
Hebe the Huge has a Play effect that does damage to undamaged creatures. Specifically, Hebe does 2 damage to each other undamaged creature. So yes, based on how entering play works and when Play effects are triggered, he is "in play" when his Play effect occurs, but his text clearly states he does not affect himself.
I'm including this question both to keep myself humble and admit that I can get things wrong, but also as a reminder to always read the card closely.

Q4: My opponent already has Dextre in play. After choosing Logos as the Active House, my opponent played Library Access and then Bouncing Deathquark. He targeted Dextre with the Bouncing Deathquark, returned Dextre to the top of his deck, then drew Dextre back into his hand as the effect from playing the Bouncing Deathquark and triggering the Library Access ability. Was this the correct order?
A4: I am interested in the outcome of this question since I have a Logos deck with the same potential combo. So digging into the FAQ page 25 of the Rules), there is a list provided detailing the first few effects of the Library/Wild Wormhole combo in this order:

  1. You gain 1 Aember from Wild Wormhole’s Aember bonus.
  2. You draw a card from Library Access’s effect.
  3. You resolve Wild Wormhole’s effect and play the top card of your deck.

In this case, the card is considered "played" as soon as it leaves the player's hand and enters play, not once its effect resolves. So no, the sequence in the question was not the correct order. Nothing prevents the player here from playing another Logos card after Bouncing Deathquark resolves, drawing and then playing Dextre. But it doesn't happen in the order we played it during that game.

Q5: Sticking with Dextre, if he fights the Stealer of Souls, does he go back to the top of the deck?
A5: The second paragraph under the definition of Destroyed reads:
If a card has a “Destroyed:” ability, the effect automatically resolves immediately before the card would be destroyed, which is also before it leaves play.
and the first paragraph of Leaves Play reads:
If a card that is in play leaves play (is returned to hand or deck, destroyed, discarded, archived, or purged), all non-Aember tokens and status cards on the card are removed, all upgrades on the card are discarded, and all lasting effects applied to the card expire.
So when Dextre is destroyed, that card goes onto the draw pile. The Stealer of Souls ability to purge Dextre would occur after Dextre is destroyed, but he is already in the deck and lingering effects do not go off.
However, the Stealer of Souls ability reads to "purge that creature and gain 1 Aember." Under the concept of Resolve as Much as You Can (page 7 of the Rules), the purge portion of the ability fizzles, but the second half can still resolve. There is no conditional link such as "if you do so" between the two halves of the ability. So Dextre will end up on top of the deck but the controller of the Stealer of Souls will gain one Aember.

That's all the questions for now. As always, feel free to reach me at @MathleteSteev on Twitter.

See you at the next Vault.
